Honey and Seaweed for Treating Ulcers...

7 March 2025
  • New Zealand researchers have made dressings from honey and seaweed extracts to treat wounds.
  • Researchers at the University of Waikato said the dressings can be used to treat foot and leg ulcers, burns, and inflamed parts of the body.
  • Experts expect that purchases of the new product, after its launch in the market, will reach about $12 billion USD by the year 2012.
  • The head of the University of Waikato, Peter Molan, had made a prototype of these dressings about six years ago.
  • These dressings made from honey and seaweed are characterized by being dry and containing antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. They do not stick to the skin, so they are easy to change and their removal does not cause any pain to patients.
  • Molan said, "These dressings are particularly useful for those with chronic wounds due to diabetes who suffer from foot and leg ulcers."
  • According to Molan, "This means it will be possible to heal the wounds of diabetic patients and avoid amputation surgeries that are often necessary due to the inability to heal wounds."
